Brief Development of the Architecture Programme and CAEM Visits

The establishment and development of the Architecture Programme in HBP, USM is briefly summarized in the Table 1.

Architecture Programme was set up in August 1972 based on Markus/Koenigsburger Report which offered Multi-disciplinary Curriculum to produce Development Officers or Project Managers. The degree offered 4 year undergraduate programme with Year 1 and 2 in Multi-disciplinary Curriculum, while Year 3 was in Design Curriculum and Year 4 was specialised in Architectural Curriculum. The programme was a multidisciplinary in nature sharing the curriculum with Planning, Engineering and Building Science or Project Management Programme.

CAEM first visit for assessing the Bachelor of Architecture Degree Program was held on 1 and 2 August 1986. It was the beginning of the  process towards the acccreditation of the program by CAEM and LAM in future years.  The panel carried out assessment of courses, the content of the courses, the facilities and the staff provided.  Suggestion and comments were made for the school to further strengthen the Architecture Programme.

A follow up second visit by CAEM was held on  20 & 21 February 1990 to examine further the development of the Bachelor of Architecture Degree Program and assessing it based on the suggestion and comments given during the first visit in 1986.  Upon the positive fulfillment of the suggestions and comments, CAEM recommended the Board of Architects to grant the Bachelor of Architecture Degree Programme recognition of LAM Part II, effective from the current session 1990/1991.  Graduates in 1991 onwards  were granted recognition LAM Part II.

The third re-accreditation visit was held on 28 September 1998 upon the invitation by the school to enable CAEM to carry out a follow up assessment for the LAM Part II accreditation granted in 1990. The programme went through a series of changes in the curriculum over the 8 years interval.    However these changes successfully maintained and further upgrade the quality of the programme as assessed by CAEM and a re-accreditation was granted and continuously recognized.

In 2004 and 2009, the fourth and fifth re-accreditation visit was made by CAEM.  Thorough assessment was carried out and again with the satisfaction of the committee, the programme was granted accreditation for the fourth and fifth time in a row and this time both for the LAM Part 1 for Bachelor of Science HBP (Architecture) and Part II for Bachelor in Architecture.

Since the last CAEM visit in March 2004 and 2009, no major changes occurred in the curriculum.  The only change that took place was the intake into B.Sc Architecture Program where from the academic year 2006/07 onwards, students have to go through an interview session before being accepted and offered into the programme. The interview system is made due to the change of the USM status being promoted as APEX University by the Ministry of Higher Education.

The other change is the change of the beginning and the end date of Semester 1 and 2 been changed by the Ministry of Higher Education since 2011/2012 Session to all universities in Malaysia. The beginning of Semester 1 is changed from July to September while Semester 2 ending date is from March to June annually.

The sixth re-accreditation visit was made by CAEM on 23 and 24 June 2014. The programme one more time was granted recognition for the LAM Part 1 for Bachelor of Science HBP (Architecture) and Part II for Bachelor in Architecture.
